Alice Goldin’s 90th celebratory birthday exhibition at the UCT Irma Stern Museum
From 21st July- 25th August 2012

In celebration of the artist’s 90th birthday, the Irma Stern Museum is proud to host a selected retrospective of paintings, graphics and drawings from 1959-2011. Works will also be for sale.

This event follows closely on the exhibition hosted by the Kunstlerhaus in Vienna, arranged in association with The Jewish Welcome Society of Vienna, which opened on May 10th and closed on June 3rd 2012.

The Kunstlerhaus, situated on the Karlsplatz, with its imposing mid 19th century façade and grand interior spaces has several exhibition galleries and the Salon was used for the Goldin show.

The President of the Kunstlerhaus, Prof Joachim Gartner selected 42 works, largely graphics and silk screens with a small collection of paintings.

The South African Ambassador to Austria, His Excellency Xolisa Mabhongo opened the show and the Director of the UCT Irma Stern Museum, Christopher Peter, gave an introductory speech. Prof Gartner thanked the Welcome Society’s Susanna Trauneck and the two friends of the Society, artist Linda Waber and organiser, Heidi Harm for the initiation and organisation of the exhibition which began with a chance viewing of a work by Goldin in a friend’s Cape Town home.

Currently the galleries of the Kunstlerhaus have been hung with works by Gustav Klimt as part of the celebrations of his 150th year and Vienna’s Now or Never cultural programme for 2012.

Goldin was born in Vienna in 1922 and had to flee with her parents and sister to the safety of England in 1938.

In 1948, a visit to South Africa resulted in marriage and the beginning of her artistic studies at the Pretoria Technical College where she enrolled in 1950. This path led to further studies in Rome, London and Cape Town and several sojourns in Paris at the Cite des Arts Internationale, developed her career leading to exhibitions spanning 60 years.

In February 2012 the Print Gallery in Woodstock hosted an exhibition of woodblocks and lithographs by Goldin and a further show has been organized to open on Sat 28 August curated by Gabriel Clark Brown.

The Casa Labia in Muizenberg will feature views of False Bay by Goldin during July.

A monograph on Goldin’s life and work has been published, written by Goldin and edited by Jeremy Lawrence and will be for sale at the UCT Irma Stern Museum.

The show will be opened by long time friend, Pieter Dirk Uys at 10.30am on Saturday 21 August.
