Seeds of Change: 1976 Michaelis Reunion Exhibition

'The Irma Stern Museum has generously offered to exhibit my work in August of this year. As I am retiring as art lecturer at the Academy of Antwerp (Hoboken, Belgium) in June, I saw this as an ideal opportunity to organise a Reunion Exhibition. I approached four of my fellow artist friends, all still active as artists, and all of us having completed our Fine Art degree at Michaelis School of Art, University of Cape Town in 1976. And so the desired exhibition started taking shape.'

Artist statement: Philip Willem Badenhorst

For some time now I have, in chronological order, close read the novels of Karel Schoeman. With titles of my previous exhibitions like Impermanence, Skindeep, The Narrow way Within and Mapping the Interior in the back of my mind, I was surprised at the home-coming offered by Schoeman’s prose, a home-coming in his imagining of an inner sensibility, the layered texture of his silences and the ever present inward-leading path.

Mindfully I continued reading his work while all the time images presented themselves to me. These images I brought into being by creating a certain sphere or environment in the collective memory. In essence it amounted to a translation from text to image to memory.

The pictorial creative process is mostly experienced as a way of meditation, a transitional phase between physical and spiritual energy. My technique amounts to a multiple, layered construction of acrylic paint.

The titles of my work are all derived from the names of farms in his novels: Verliesfontein, Moedersgift, Badskop, Leliefontein, Tweefontein, Silwerwaters, Rust-mijn-ziel, Heuningkrans, Twijfelfontein and Nooitgevonden.

Artist statement: Giovanna Biallo-Stone

I am working with Colour Oil on Canvas. Modeling the Oil Paint with a palette knife, with emphasis on the edges of the colour fields. I am painting, where one colour meets another. Careful consideration is given to the surface of the Oil Paint. By using a range of Tones, Hues and Colours that can live together in Harmony and Discord, I create a subjective Artwork. I am influenced by Turner and Seurat. Inspired by Paul Klee, Johannes Itten and Bridget Riley.

Artist statement: Julia Beeton-Kuhlmann

I grew up in Irene, a small village positioned on the main railway route between Pretoria and Johannesburg, a haven for ‘peace and quiet’. As children we were cocooned in rural safety - dairy cows, a country club and everyone’s back garden.

Michaelis Art School in the seventies presented a huge shift; suddenly I was exposed to a different world of readers, thinkers and the concept of conceptual. Kevin Atkinson summed it up as he wrote “sink or swim” all over the Hiddingh Campus walls - so I chose to swim and feel that I haven’t stopped for over 40 years, attempting to stay afloat in my own vital visual world. I love to paint; I love the smell and joy of working with paint and I love, oil on canvas.

Stanley Pinker’s quirky juxtaposing of personal images within a crafted composition resonated strongly with me and helped to inform my creative eye. I use strong, flat colour. I like to observe the patterns found in nature and feel the space around them, I try to paint my imagination.

I paint in various sizes, often in series and also use coloured cotton stitching as a pure line.

Artist statement: Asiya Clark

In her work, Asiya Clarke playfully imagines the beginnings of creation, the emergence of the particular from a great undifferentiated mass. She photographs water, using the imagery as a basis for painting. She reinterprets this apparently random data, the distortions and reflections within the water, to find meanings and metaphors. The symmetry found in reflections relates to the body, particularly the face, figuration appearing within abstraction, presenting a private gateway to a parallel reality.

Her life and work are informed by Sufism, the mystical aspect of Islam, that requires a temporary loss of ego, allowing an immersion in the universal. She is preoccupied with self transcendence and the desire to “gaze upon mystery”.

Artist statement: Simon Stone

Presently working with oil or encaustic paint. Scale varies from large to small. Primary a figurative painter incorporating landscapes, buildings, objects and abstract elements. Different images are often placed together on the same canvas. Starting with a water colour sketch. The idea is then transferred to canvas and worked till I have a sense of inevitability or a sense of rightness. An effort is made to keep the interpretation of meaning open and slightly ambiguous.
